Also, as Deadblog says, a credit report is a real eye-opener. I had never looked at mine until I got ready to start shopping for my first house. Man, there is some interesting information on there (some accurate, some definitely wildly inaccurate). It's worth doing at least once a year.

Dave: That's what they told me, anyway. For all I know it was even sloppier than that, but I've nothing to go on other than what they told me, so that's what I go on.

Aaron: I thought the hush money was enough. Don't tell me the Brazilian exchange rate was so unfavorable you blew it all in That Particular Weekend. Just remember, the Sisters of Good Faith will always have my back after Rio. You just remember that.

Mistyped your SSN? That should be impossible. There should be check digits and stuff. Otherwise the whole caboodle is utterly insecure, and genuine errors will flood even the crimes.

Just to add to the paranoia factor, sometime use one/two/three of the big credit reporting places to get their one-time free credit report online.

No, really, try this at home. Now, if you're like me (and others I know) there's some really interesting stuff that comes up on there. Most notably is that there'll be things very close to accurate or things that will look very much like someone made an error on someone else's book keeping somewhere. Both typically mean someone screwed up, linking you to someone else mistakenly (DeadBlob of 123 Blob Rd. [you] got typoed to DeadBlob of 132 Rd. [Someone else, tax evader]) or someone linked someone else to you mistakenly (DeadBlob SN #123456 [not you, mother/father-raper] to DeadBlob SN 123465 [you, saintly]).

If you're like me, these haven't made a difference and you've been able to do things like purchase cars, houses, etc. but it may behoove you to - like me - have all the inaccuracies removed if possible.
