So, is anyone reading this knowledgeable about, or experimenting with, or curious about High Dynamic Range photography? This is something I really, really want to try, just for the heck of it. (If you ask me, it makes real subjects look like pre-rendered backgrounds in videogames, which is strangely beautiful).
Some samples can be found in the HDR Flickr pool, or in the blog post linked above (which also includes links to a tutorial).
I don’t have the full version of Photoshop CS 2, just Photoshop Elements 4. However, Photomatix has a trial version available for download, and there are of course versions for both Mac and Windows. I’ll probably download the OS X version tonight, then bust out the camera this weekend and see what I can produce.

I have to build a set of web pages for the the power company up here, and are, in theory, supposed to use this technique on some of the photos. (Sortof…my boss had no idea what I was talking about. I just told her I was going to do it and she gave me a blank look.)
I’ll let you know how it turns out in a couple weeks when I actually get to that portion of my inbox….

Sweet! I just installed Photomatix last night, and this weekend I’m going to try to take some pictures. I need to make sure I understand how to change the setting that’s supposed to be incrementally different between each exposure, though.

Ooh! Ooh!
I bet you can do this with GIMP.
Translate the saturation level of the image into a mask, and then combine them together… somthing like that. I’m intrugued.

Ooooooh - being largely GIMP-illiterate, I have no idea how to do that. But man, that would be pretty sweet.
